Innovative, multi-functional capsule structure wins Archiproducts Design Award 2020

LAGO has always seen design as a tool for social transformation, a way of delving deeper into the needs of contemporary living. This is why LAGO has chosen to collaborate with other businesses on this innovative project that focuses on one of today’s hot topics: how we can rethink the places we live in to create flexible, multi-functional spaces. With this in mind, we have created CAPSULE, an independent, multi-functional, modular structure, which can be positioned next to an existing building to increase the available square footage per person, and offer new ways to use the space. Winner of the illustrious Archiproducts Design Award 2020 in the Construction category, this project saw LAGO collaborating with two outstanding Italian organisations: Manni Group, a long-standing name in industry based in Verona, and design studio Il Prisma. Flexible, safe comfort: LAGO design gives voice to new ways of living in spaces. The CAPSULE unit design is flexible and reconfigurable: the pre-assembled lightweight-steel supporting structure can be fitted with various types of cladding to suit project requirements, and flexible, modular furniture is provided by LAGO. CAPSULE is the ideal solution for expanding the available space required for offices, residential complexes, hospitality and catering facilities, and retail spaces. Bookcases with a striking self-standing design, custom-designed modular storage units, tables and desks which can be moved around the space create a truly flexible set of furnishings for all of the different CAPSULE usage cases. Depending on how the furniture is arranged, you can easily and practically introduce divisions between separate areas, or create an open space offering maximum comfort. This solid, dynamic and stimulating design generates new ways for people to interact with the space. The design idea provides a concrete response to the current challenges we face, calling into question how fit for purpose many public and private living spaces are. At the same time, it highlights the awareness and sensitivity of the three project partners as regards new ways of using space. Architecture needs to be sustainable and capable of transforming itself and relocating, to create safe and comfortable environments that adapt to the different purposes the structure may be used for.
