The aim was to transform the stand into a revolutionary piece of ecological architecture. This was the challenge LAGO set for the Salone del Mobile 2022 with Good House. Designed like a contemporary, sustainable home, it will be the focus of LAGO’s exhibition space covering more than 800 m2. Good House takes visitors on a journey of cultural awareness in a setting designed to present the very best of the new collections by LAGO, a leading furniture and design company, and find a new balance between people, nature and technology.
Good House has been designed with the circular economy in mind and as such is fully recyclable and can be reused for multiple years. Thanks to its zero waste and drastically lighter and more compact build, Good House ensures lower greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere (including CO2) by up to 87% compared to a traditional trade fair stand. Through this project, LAGO is promoting a scalable usage model, which began with research launched in 2014 and was brought to fruition in 2020 by Spinlife. Spinlife is a spin-off project from the University of Padua, led by Professor Alessandro Manzardo, which applies the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology.
“The aim of the research was to develop an eco-design model for trade fair stands to minimise the negative impact on the environment,” says Prof. Manzardo. “This collaboration with Henoto and LAGO carries value beyond just this single project. If all the global trade fair stands were built using this approach, we could prevent up to 239,982 tonnes of CO2 equivalent being released in the atmosphere. Considering that the average Italian family of four consumes around 3,000 kWh of electricity per year and the impact of this in terms of global warming is equivalent to 1,248 kg CO2eq, then 239,982 tonnes of CO2eq is equivalent to the annual consumption of 192,293 average Italian households.”
LAGO’s partner in creating Good House is the innovative BolognaFiere company Henoto, designer and maker of trade fair stands all over the world. For some aspects of LAGO’s stand, Henoto even drew inspiration from one of LAGO’s own products: the Et Voilà wardrobe. The project’s guiding philosophy was Henoto’s “The Neutral Way”, which encompasses compensation, sustainability and the circular economy. By monitoring environmental parameters on an ongoing basis through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), its environmental impact can be assessed over time and any corrective action can be implemented with respect to the initial estimates, to safeguard the entire project.
“We have been committed to sustainability and the environment for many years,” says the General Manager of BolognaFiere, Antonio Bruzzone. “We have diversified our production and introduced innovative design logic in a sustainable way through Henoto, a leading company in the stand fitting sector. Specifically we have been working with the University of Padua to develop stand structures made of aluminium – one of the most reusable materials – and non-polluting recyclable fabric. It’s something we’re going to continue working on in the future with even greater interest and intensity, because doing our job well also means taking care of the environment and the area we live in.
“At LAGO we want to show how architectural thinking always has to take into account real human needs,” says Daniele Lago, CEO & Head of Design at LAGO S.p.A., “in a context such as the one we live in today, where sustainability is now a requirement for everyone, especially in business. Being aware of, and taking care of, the natural environment we live in are key when it comes to wanting to broaden our outlook in more directions and different forms of expression. For us, design is a key driver of this vision. Good House represents our desire for a type of design that is oriented towards caring for the environment and the people who live in it.”
Good House is inspired by a modern house immersed in nature with large windows overlooking the countryside. There is a wooden base around the edge of the stand which reinforces the spatial dimension of the house, elevating it from its surroundings.
The absence of any breaks in the architecture gives the space a sense of flow and makes it easy to explore. A few, simply designed walls increase the importance of the single spaces.
Vast social areas alternate with smaller, more intimate spots for rest and study. The alternating full and empty spaces in the ceiling design reinforce the ongoing connection with the outdoors.
A long, narrow aisle down the middle creates an open space designed to replicate the feel of a “piazza” – an architectural archetype par excellence.
The choice of simple, natural materials contributes to creating a sleek and simple, relaxing space.
Warm-toned mezzotints soften the direct natural light, dampening its violent streaks and tinging the space with delicate shades of amber.
